Ghana: Organic sector now represented in the Ministry of Food and Agriculture

A Desk for Organic Agriculture has been established in the Ministry of Agriculture. This is reported in the latest Africa Organic News of the IFOAM Africa Office.

Considering the multiples benefits of organic agriculture and the growth of the organic sector in Ghana, a Desk for Organic Agriculture has been established in the Ministry of Agriculture. The desk works as a contact point for organic agriculture to liaise between the government and the organic industry.

The desk plans to increase awareness of organic agriculture and build the capacity of officers of the Ministry of Agriculture a t the district and regional levels, so that they can better serve the interests of organic farmers and support the further development of the organic sector in the country.

According to the 2010 urvey on organic agriculture world-wide, carried out by IFOAM and FiBL, in Ghana, more than 26'000 hectares are under organic agricultural management; there are more than 9000 farmers (data 2008). The latest data on organic agriculture world-wide will be presented at BioFach, on February 19, 2010.

During BioFach, the new edition of the yearbook The World of Organic Agriculture can be ordered at a reduced price at the booths of IFOAM (Hall 1, no. 330) and FiBL (Hall 1, no. 240), and will be available at the FiBL and IFOAM webshops from the of end February.
