Spain: Organic agricultural land increases by 10 percent in 2011

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture has recently released the latest data on organic agriculture in Spain: Land under organic management, livestock data, and operator numbers.

In Spain, the organic agricultural land has increased by 10 percent in 2011 and is now at 1.6 million hectares or 6.5 percent of the agricultural land. In addition to the farmed land, there are 200'000 hectares of wild collection areas and forests, so that the total certified area is 1.8 million hectares.

The number of organic operators went up to 32'837 from 27'767 in 2010, an increase of 18 percent.
Of these, 32'206 were farmers, with an increase of 15 percent.
Of the cropped land, cereals had the largest share of 178'061 hectares, (+7.21 percent), followed by olives with 168'619 hectares (+33.48 percent), nuts with 96'990 hectares (+7.2 percent) and grapes 79'016 hectares (+23.7 percent).
