Peruvian organic exports: Statistics and trends 2007-2011

Peruvian economist F. Javier Martinez reports that organic agriculture continued to grow in exports through 2011, with average annual growth for the five year period from 2007-2011 of nearly 28%. The value of organic agricultural exports in 2011 exceeded US$324 million.

Development of Peruvian exports 2007-2012

Peru's main national market for exported organic food is the United States, accounting for about 30% of all export sales, although sales to Europe eclipsed those to the United States and accounted for more than half of all exports. Peruvian exports of organic products to Switzerland grew by over 100% over the past five years. The Middle East also showed siginificant growth.

Coffee accounted for 58% of all exports, with bananas and cacao making up most of the rest. Mango and other fruit showed signs of growth, as did exports of the traditional Andean grain quinoa.

Martine  from Promperu, the Peruvian governmental export promotion agency, said that international cooperation and business growth in the organic sector remains strong. He forecasts exports to break the US$400 million mark in 2012.
